German Shepherd X-Husky Mix went missing off the coast of San Diego, California, after falling off a fishing boat with his man, Nick Howarth.
Nick spent the day searching for Luna around St. Clement’s Island with Navy personnel after reporting his disappearance, but to no avail.

Unfortunately, Luna was thought to have drowned.
Five weeks later, staff at St. Clement’s Naval Auxiliary Landing Field spotted a dog sitting on the side of the road as they arrived for work.
This did not seem right because no domestic animals were allowed on the island, which shows that it was not an old wanderer, it was Luna!

“She was sitting there shaking her head,” said Sandy Damnick, the Navy’s public affairs officer.
Luna seemed to be able to swim to shore, and until she was rescued, she escaped rats and dead fish.
Despite suffering from poor nutrition, Luna was healthy and unharmed.

Luna was taken straight to Colorado, where she would be reunited with her human friend Nick’s best friend, who would take care of her until Nick returned from the trip.

Luna was also given a new dog tag by the Navy, which read, “For Luna, have faith.”
